Origin and genome evolution of chromosomal races in the polyploid complex of Prospero autumnale (Hyacinthaceae)

The project focuses on an investigation of the cytological features of the highly chromosomally variable genus Prospero employing repetitive DNA analysis and the interpretation of repeat landscape changes in a sound phylogenetic context. This research addresses evolutionary questions concerning the origins, mechanisms, directions and frequencies of chromosomal change. The main, long-term aim is to understand the role of chromosomal change in formation of distinct intraspecific lineages, diversification and speciation both on the diploid and polyploid level.
